Zero Wasting @ Earth Fair 2018

April 22 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

Free

This will be our tenth year for the San Diego Earth Fair to set a goal to become a Zero Waste Event. We would like you to be a part of it! Recycling has been available since the beginning of Earth Day and recently collection of organic materials for composting has been added. In the past, the organics bins were only placed in the food court area, but this year we will have the organics bins placed throughout the park. There remains some mixed material in the trash, comprised of both non-recyclable and recyclable materials, but most of this material could be recycled.

Our members and volunteers have a very important responsibility. To get to zero waste we need to make sure that the attendees use the appropriate bin. Our volunteers will be the guide. We will use this opportunity to teach attendees how zero waste can eliminate the need for landfills and concepts such as “waste,” educate attendees about the need for manufacturer redesign and responsibility, greenhouse gas emission reductions by recycling, and monetary value of resource management versus landfill reliance. We ask your assistance to make this worthy goal a reality this Earth Day.

FAQs

How old do you have to be to volunteer?

We recommend that you are at least 14 years old. We will accept those that are younger if they are accompanied by a parent and/or guardian.

Can I volunteer for more than one shift?

Please! If you can stay all day great, please make those selections as you register. The times may overlap but don’t worry that helps ensure attendance when we do shift changes.

What will I be doing?

Depending on the assignment each of our volunteers will be guiding the attendees (60,000 people to be exact) how to recycle and compost. This means talking to people, picking up trash, sorting through recycables, etc. This is not a clean job and can be hard work, but enlightening and rewarding at the same time. So if you think you are just going to sit around, playing on your phone just to collect your volunteer hours think again. This is task for those that want to really make a difference.

Can I volunteer with my friend?

My first response would be yes but realistically no. We need over 300 people to help us get to zero waste and if we are short we need to move people to where they are needed most. So if you have to be with your friend then this may not be the job for you. If you can work alone and are independent and outgoing, we would love to have you.

Can my group volunteer?

Of course, the more the merrier, but I want to forewarn you that each station is not next to each other and the group will not be working together, but will be added to the 300 volunteers that we need so desperately. Also, please register everyone individually, this way we can keep track of everyone and make sure each of those  that attends will get their t’shirt as promised.

How do I register?

Simply select the shift you are interested in above. If you register for all day you may receive a monetary incentives.
