Volunteer as a Coach

The Zero Waste San Diego is looking for passionate and dedicated individuals that are comfortable using their hands to help their community troubleshoot and repair small items. As a coach, your role is to encourage participants to explore their broken stuff and have fun. Enthusiasm and patience are more important than extensive repair expertise. Coaches all help each other with their collective knowledge and puzzle solving abilities.

Activities:

  • Assist users with technology skills using a variety of devices
  • Troubleshoot minor technical problems from a variety of devices
  • May serve as a Fixit Clinic Coach to assist users on repairing and maintaining a variety of devices, appliances, clothes, bicycles, tools and more
  • May serve as a Fixit Clinic Researcher and/or Assistant during one of our many monthly Fixit Clinics
    • Helping with checking in attendees
    • Data entry
    • Researching appliance manuals and how to… videos
    • Opening and Closing of the clinic

Desirables:

  • Basic computer skills
  • Basic communication and people skills
  • Ability to troubleshoot and identify problems with broken items presented at the SD Fixit Clinics
  • Basic repair skills with any of the following;
    • Clothing/textiles
    • Electrical appliances (ie. Computers, cell phones, toasters…)
    • Bicycles
    • Furniture/wooden objects
    • Tool maintenance
    • And….the list is endless
  • Basic skills and being comfortable handling all sorts of tools like soldering iron, screwdrivers and drills.
  • Excited and driven to learn new things and help your community

We aren’t necessarily looking for experts just passionate individuals that are willing to learn and explore a new skill with the community.

Duties:

We are looking for potential partners and assistance in order to implement this awesome event.  Some of the things that are needed are as follows;

  • Research for grants, product manuals and how to guides
  • Assistance in writing grants and compiling information
  • Writing letters to potential partners to assist in the success of the program
  • Volunteer recruitment
  • Onsite assistance (i.e. putting up canopies, making sure the coaches have the proper tools and support, etc)
  • Donation of tools, misc supplies, storage unit (covered wagon trailer), and money
  • Website and Facebook Page design and social media marketing
  • Registration coordinator via Eventbrite
  • And much more…
